Pixel selection

An important aspect of the raw pixel analysis is determining, which pixels should be involved in it and how. The selection is based on the color and value of raw pixels.

The effect of pixel color and value selection is described in other chapters, here we deal only with the way the selection occurs.

The tools of pixel selection are:

* the Black point and the White point values together determine the pixel value range, the black point giving the lower limit and the white point the upper limit of the range.

The current values are shown in the respective input field. The range of possible values for both limits is
o 0 to 16383 if the raw values are limited to 4095,
o 0 to 65535 if the raw values are limited to 16383,
o 0 to 131071 otherwise (this occurs with 16 bit depth, created by some digital backs).

The initial value of the black point is either
o the minimum of the black level correction values, if there are any; these are gained either from the descriptive data of the raw file, or calculated the so-called masked pixels around the image,
o 0 if black level correction does not apply.

The initial value of the white point is either
o the highest of the saturation/non-linearity levels of the pixels, if available,
o the white level specification from the descriptive data of the raw file,
o the maximum possible pixel value according to the bit depth of the sensor.

Co skusam googlit, vsade je uvadzane ze Samsung GX-20 ma 14bit raw

AHoj. Dal som tuto otazku do plena aj na dpreview forum a vzislo z toho nasledovne. Samsung GX-20 aj Pentax K20D su vlastne identicke vo vnutri a maju len 12-bit RAW. Niekde pri predstavovani to zmrvili PR oddelenia jednotlivych znaciek a potom chybnu tlacovu spravu prevzali viaceri. Ale uz na oficialnych strankach samsungu sa v specifikacii nespomina ani 22-bit AD prevodnik a ani 14-bit RAW. Ale jeden komentar je tam naozaj dobry. Ak ma niekto zaujem nech si to skukne tutu

Zaujimavy program a este zaujimavejsie vysledky. Dik za ten tip. Ked som don postupne nahadzoval data, tak:
1. POTVRDILO to ze Samsung GX-20 aj Pentax K20D su s 12-bit. RAW (Cierna od 0 a biela koncila s hodnotou okolo 4096)
2. Nikon D3 aj D3x to hadzalo na 14-bit. RAW
3. D300s aj D700 to davalo 12-bit.RAW ale tam neviem urcit, ci nahodou to tak tester nemal zapnute len na 12-bitovu hlbku... Prespoklad je ze by to malo v pohode slapat s tou 14-bit....
3. Skusil som aj Canona 50D, 5D Mark II a tam to bolo asi najzaujimavejsie. Zatial co Nikon siel od Black Level 0 cez celu skalu a koncil az White Level okolo 16384, tak Canon siel v ciernej az od okolo hodnoty 1000 a koncil pri 13800...
